Wapato?
What is this? I was hoping Wapato, but the bulb doesn't look right. Hopefully not Arrow Arum. Does Arrow Arum Have a bulb? There are veins in the leaf, but they are so small... I can’t see them very well. It was found in a swamp in Georgia. For now I'm growing it in my kitchen to see what happens.

The first one looks like it could be young arrowhead, but the second one looks like lotus, of which there is quite a bit in South Jersey where I was early last summer. Grows by the acre. Did you see any seed pods like this around there? If so, lotus. I hear you can eat the tuber. |

RE: Wapato?
They are the same plant, and I'm afraid it's Arrow Arum
"It is toxic and has raphides of calcium"... poisonous-yes, fatal-yes and painful-yes, but apparently the tuber can be rendered edible by proper preparation...Drying and or roasting for long periods, followed by a brave small portion taste test...looking to see if it burns. For anyone out there in a survival situation... this one deserves some research first before trying to eat it.http://www.eattheweeds.com/peltandra-vir...-storer-2/ Thanks for your reply I checked out the Lotus. That would actually be very cool if it turned out to be Lotus, but I'm very sure now it is not....but Lotus apparently entirely edible and decrative No seed pods either...I'm new to Wild Edibles and having a great time at it. They even have a Tuckahoe town down there, too! (He mentions a Tuckahow, NY in the article, which is the indian name of this stuff.) Thanks for getting me cleared up on this! |
